How healthy are your kidneys?

Tips to maintain your kidneys health and prevent Kidney Disease

How healthy are your kidneys?
The kidneys are those two organs located in the middle of our back, just below the rib cage, to which we should pay particular attention and care because of the vital function they perform in our bodies. Healthy kidneys filter and process between 180 and 200 liters of blood daily, eliminating waste and excess water to produce urine.

What is the importance of the kidneys?
In addition to removing wastes and excess water from the body, our kidneys also perform the function of eliminating acid that is produced by the body's cells to maintain a balance of water, salts, and minerals in our blood. Healthy kidneys also produce hormones that help control blood pressure and produce red blood cells.

Signs and symptoms that your kydneys are NOT healthy
  • Anemia
  • Fatigue
  • Pallor
  • High Pressure
  • Liquid retention
  • Foam or blood in the urine
  • Itchy skin
  • Muscle cramps
  • Swollen feet and ankles
  • Excess or insufficient urination

If you notice one or more of these symptoms, it may be a red flag from your kidneys to your body. Don't hesitate to seek immediate help from a specialist so that together you can assess the most appropriate treatment.

Risk factors:

  • Family history of kidney disease

  • Drink little water

  • A high-salt, low-fiber diet

  • Taking certain medications for a long time

  • No physical activity

  • Being a man

  • High blood pressure

  • Diabetes

  • Heart failure

  • Being obese

Prevention tips to keep your kidneys healthy
  • Drink enough water: Drinking 2 liters of water a day is essential for all aspects of our health, much more so for the kidneys. But don't exaggerate either, overhydration will not make the kidneys do their job any better
  • Maintain a healthy diet: People who have diabetes, high blood pressure, and some cardiovascular diseases may be at higher risk of developing kidney disease. Some of these diseases can be prevented by eating a healthy diet and practicing other healthy habits
  • Avoid foods with a lot of salt
  • Keep your cholesterol level under control
  • Exercise: A healthy exercise routine of at least 30 minutes a day (not too strenuous if you are not conditioned to do so), as well as healthy eating, can go a long way in preventing disease
  • Quit smoking
  • Beware of self-medication and over-the-counter medications: Regular or prolonged overuse of many medications can cause kidney damage. Using them occasionally if your kidneys are healthy probably poses no risk, but it's best to avoid self-medicating
  • Get tested regularly for CKD to rule out or detect early signs of kidney disease

Kidney problems diagnosed early, accompanied by proper treatment and support from the Specialist, the patient, and his or her family or friends, do not deprive a person of leading an active and complete life. If you have kidney disease or suspect you may have it, work with your doctor to manage the problems it brings.

Remember periodic visits to your Urologist can keep you healthy.
