Medication that blocks SARS-CoV-2?

The 2019 coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) is having a catastrophic impact on the health of humanity. The widespread community transmission has caused the corresponding authorities to implement strict distancing measures with severe economic consequences.

Previously, the journal Nature revealed its research on developing an orally effective ribonucleoside analog inhibitor MK-4482 / EIDD-2801 of influenza viruses that were used for use against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS). -CoV-2) and is currently in phase II / III clinical trials (NCT04405570 and NCT04405739).

The investigation "Therapeutically administered ribonucleoside analog MK-4482 / EIDD-2801 blocks transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in ferrets" was conducted by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State University. 

This research examines the efficacy of MK-4482 / EIDD-2801, also known as Molnupiravir, which was administered therapeutically in ferrets to mitigate the infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and block the transmission of the COVID disease. -19.

During the investigation, Therapeutic treatment administered MK-4482 / EIDD-2801 in mitigating SARS-CoV-2 infection and blocking transmission in the ferret model was examined since ferrets, and related members of the genus weasel transmit the virus efficiently with a clinical minimum, which resembles the spread in the young adult human population.

A high burden of SARS-CoV-2 in nasal tissues and secretions was confirmed, which coincided with efficient transmission through direct contact. Therapeutic treatment of animals infected with MK-4482 / EIDD-2801 twice daily significantly reduced the burden of SARS-CoV-2 in the upper respiratory tract and completely abolished the spread to untreated contact animals. This study identified oral MK-4482 / EIDD-2801 as a promising antiviral.
