Coronavirus: New Protocols for the Childbirth

As the days go by, we realize that the statistics circulating regarding the number of people infected by Coronavirus (COVID-19) increases significantly. From country to country, we ascend to varying stages and realize that if there is one thing we have in common around the world, it is that we are all still trying to learn to live with this new pandemic.

Without a doubt, one of the sectors of the population that are facing the biggest challenges today is pregnant women and those close to their due date. Many investigations have been carried out in the last few days, as there are many doubts and uncertainties in this regard. In this regard, one of the most recent investigations shared by the medical journal The New England Journal of Medicine provided valuable knowledge: most of the pregnant women who tested positive for COVID-19 were asymptomatic.

Pregnant women usually have to keep their medical appointments on an ongoing basis, and when they are in the last weeks of pregnancy, these visits become almost essential. Being in constant interaction with the medical service, they face the challenge of staying free of the virus. Therefore, this research supports the use of the Coronavirus test (COVID-19) for pregnant women who are admitted to the hospital for delivery.

The benefits of testing patients are many, primarily:
  • Where to place the patient to avoid possible future infections
  • What protective equipment and materials should be used by the medical and nursing staff who will deliver the baby
  • Above all, what extra measures should be taken in newborn care
During these times of crisis, it is vitally important not disregard these clinical data that give us the opportunity to prevent and protect both moms about to give birth, the newborn, the patients within the Hospital, and the team of Doctors and Nurses who provide care during these times of pandemic.

Steps to take during Coronavirus era
Some steps pregnant women should take during this Coronavirus contingency are:
  • The same actions of distancing actions as the rest of the population:
    • Wash your hands with soap and water frequently and use antibacterial based on 70% alcohol
    • When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth well with the inner corner of your arm
    • Obey the quarantine and maintain a distance of at least 6 ft from other people
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as much as possible
  • Carry disinfectant wipes or liquid disinfectant at all times and use them when touching any public surface
  • Avoid using public transportation as much as possible
  • When you go to the hospital for a general check-up, try to wait in a faraway place where there are many people, use face mask and gloves

Finally, if you are pregnant and have any of these symptoms:
