Can social networks influence what your child eats?

A Recent Study Revealed the Impact of Social Media on Children’s Food Choices.

A recent study highlights the influence social media has on the food choices children make. In the study, children were randomly assigned to view different social media influencer profiles featuring healthy snacks, unhealthy snacks, or non-food products.

The findings showed that children who were exposed to social media posts promoting unhealthy snacks consumed more calories and had a significantly higher intake of unhealthy foods compared to those who viewed content featuring healthy snacks. Advertising has a strong impact on children—“they see it and they want it.” For this reason, parents need to be prepared to set limits at home. To reduce the risks associated with social media marketing, it is important to talk with children about healthy food choices and clearly define which foods should and should not be available at home.

Parents should always be aware of what their children are watching in order to discuss the content they are exposed to. Understanding why a child asks for certain products or talks about specific topics starts with knowing what they are seeing—including advertisements. Staying informed helps parents guide these conversations more effectively.

The study’s results do not suggest that children should be completely restricted from online content. However, it is recommended that screen time be supervised—ideally on a visible device such as a desktop computer or television, rather than on handheld devices.
