How to prepare for an x-ray?

It is important to go to the doctor when a more detailed study of what happens in your body. We tell you how to prepare for an X-ray shot.

How to prepare for an x-ray?

An X-ray is a painless exam; it generates images that allow you to see the inside of the body and differentiate between soft tissues and dense matter, such as bones. In most cases, an X-ray is taken to look for bone fractures and infections, benign or cancerous tumors, arthritis, blocked blood vessels, or tooth decay. These plates can be used to diagnose digestive tract problems or foreign bodies that have been swallowed.

How to prepare

Depending on the type of X-ray, the doctor may ask you to fast before the exam. In most cases, this is only necessary for certain plates of the digestive tract. Generally, fasting requires that you do not eat or drink for 8 to 12 hours before the test.

Wear comfortable clothing for the X-ray exam. Generally, you should remove your clothing from the waist up and change it into a gown for the exam. You must remove all jewelry, glasses, or metal objects; both clothing and jewelry can obscure the X-ray images.

If you have an abdominal X-ray, empty your bladder before the procedure. Once the procedure begins, you will not be able to move or leave the exam room. Try not to drink too much water before the procedure.

What you can expect

In certain types of X-rays, it is necessary to take a contrast medium; this allows to demarcate specific areas of the body on the X-ray. Depending on the type of X-ray you need, they will ask you for the following:

  • Drink a barium or iodine solution

  • Take a pill

  • Get an injection

The Radiologist, the specialist trained to interpret X-rays and other imaging tests, reviews and analyzes the images for signs that may suggest some type of condition.

Your doctor will discuss the results with you and any treatments or other tests or procedures that are needed.

When to see a doctor?

Contact your doctor before undergoing an X-ray. If you are breastfeeding or pregnant, it is important to tell your doctor. During the procedure, you will be exposed to small amounts of radiation dangerous to a developing fetus.

Depending on the circumstances, an alternative imaging test may be ordered to avoid radiation.
