What is osteosarcoma?

Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer despite being so rare and begins in the cells that form the bones. It is usually found in long bones, most often in those of the legs, but sometimes it also occurs in the bones of the arms. Although, it can form in any bone.

Osteosarcoma tends to manifest in adolescents and young adults, but it can also occur in older adults and children. Usually the treatment consists of chemotherapy and surgery.


The signs of osteosarcoma can be the following:

-Swelling near a bone
-Bone or joint pain
-Bone injury or fracture without obvious reason
-It can be confused with sports injuries, so it is always recommended to go to the doctor and avoid anything.


The cause of osteosarcoma is not very clear, and most cases appear to occur sporadically; more however, some factors may increase the risk.



Risk factor's

-A previous treatment with radiotherapy
-Certain inherited or genetic diseases, such as hereditary retinoblastoma, Bloom syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Rothmund-Thomson syndrome, Diamond-Blackfan anemia, Paget's disease and Werner's syndrome


Osteosarcoma can spread from where it is to other areas, making treatment and recovery difficult. Usually, surgery is performed to remove the tumor and preserve the limb.

As with other types of serious cancer, aggressive chemotherapy for osteosarcoma can cause side effects both in the short and long term. The health care team takes steps to treat and control these effects as well as possible. In addition, it is important that you learn what you should pay attention to and that you contact the team if you have questions.



There is still no known way to prevent osteosarcoma, some factors, such as having received radiation therapy or having certain genetic diseases, increase the risk of suffering from this disorder. But this does not mean they have osteosarcoma. However, any sign or symptom should control as soon as possible. See your doctor immediately. Timely help can save your life.
