What is Menopause?

Menopause is a natural biological process that happens, usually, in your 40s or 50s (some women can go through Menopause early as a result of a Hysterectomy or sometime after Chemotherapy).  Menopause is the time when your menstrual periods stop permanently. After Menopause, your ovaries produce deficient levels of hormones like estrogen and progesterone.

What conditions could cause Premature Menopause?

  • Premature ovarian failure
  • Hysterectomy

Menopause Stages

Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the first step before Menopause when your usual pattern of menstruation goes through a phase of atypical menstruation and finally cease menstruating. Perimenopause ends when a woman has not a period for 12 months in a row.

Symptoms of Perimenopause

  • Irregular periods
  • You might skip a few months
  • Your periods may be heavier or lighter than before
  • Hot flashes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Chills
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Mood changes
  • Weight gain
  • Slowed metabolism
  • Thinning hair
  • Dry skin
  • Loss of breast abundance
  • Racing heart
  • Headaches
  • Joint and muscle aches and pains
  • Changes in libido
  • Trouble controlling your bladder

Perimenopause can last between two and eight years; for most women, Perimenopause lasts about four years. In the last 1 to 2 years of this stage, estrogen levels fall faster.

Menopause

Menopause is when you have 12 months in a row without any period. Your ovaries have stopped releasing ovules and making estrogen.
