What do the lungs do?

Our lungs are anatomic structures belonging to the respiratory system in our rib cage that allows our body to take oxygen from the air, they also help remove carbon dioxide (a waste gas that can be toxic) from our body. It ranges from the neck’s base through the diaphragm; besides our lungs the rib cage also contains our heart.

The main function of our lungs is to provide our body with the necessary oxygen to live and at the same time get rid of the leftover CO2 through exhalation; How? The exchange of these gas takes place between the pulmonary alveoli and the body´s blood.

When it comes to lung size it may vary, since the right lung tends to be bigger than the left one and it is because of the heart size. It has three surfaces called: mediastinal, diaphragmatic, and coastal surface.

Lung functions can be divided into two main functions: respiratory and non-respiratory:

Lung respiratory functions:

It takes care of the gas exchange with the blood, that is the reason why the alveoli are in strict contact with the capillaries. In fact, in the alveoli is where the oxygen passes through from the air to the blood, and the carbon dioxide from the blood to the air, this happens because of the difference of oxygen and carbon dioxide partial pressures between the blood and the alveoli.

Lung Non-respiratory functions:

-They act as external filters, defending from the intense air pollution they are exposed to.

-Metabolic actions: drugs removal, acid-base equilibria.

-Prostaglandins system, this cause bronchodilation or bronchoconstriction.

Lungs are vital organs for the human being and its correct function provides us a better life quality; keep your lungs healthy following the recommended tips given by respiratory health experts. If you have any respiratory-related trouble, difficult breathing symptoms, or persisting pulmonary trouble, we highly recommend visiting a Pulmonologist immediately.
